작가 팀 오브라이언 (Tim O'Brien)은 미국 미네소타주 오스틴에서 태어났고 대학을 졸업한 해 베트남 전쟁에 징집되어 참전했으며 그후  하버드 대학원에서 공부를 했고, 전쟁에 대한 회고록  If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home,1973 를 발표했고 뉴욕 타임즈의 올해의 뛰어난 책으로 선정되었다. 그후 1974년에 발표된 소설 Going After Cacciato 로 내셔날 북 어워드를 수상했다. 그의 작품으로는 "Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?" (1975),  The Nuclear Age (1985), In the Lake of the Woods 91994), July,July(2002), Dad's Maybe Book(2019) 등이 있다.

 

<줄거리 요약>

팀 오브라이언은 베트남 전쟁으로 이야기를  시작되고 알파 팀원들이 전쟁중에 가지고 다니던 것들에 대해 세세하게 기록한다. 그리고 첫번째로 테드 라벤더의 죽음이 나온다. 그는 화장실에 갔다 오다가 머리에 총을 맞고 죽었고 그의 상사 지미 크로스는 그의 죽음을 자책하며  그의 짝사랑 마사를 떠올린다.

 

on the rainy river 에서는 오브라이언이 베트남 징집 통지서를 받고 캐나다로 도망가려고 국경 근처에 팁탑 오두막에 머물면서 만난 할아버지와 함께 지내며 그가 도망가려는 걸 알면서도 모른척 배에 태워 노를 저으며 낚시대를 내리고 있는 할아버지를 보며,  전쟁을 피해 도망가려는 죄책감과 그로 인해 실망시키게 될 가족들에  두려움이 더 커 결국 다시 집으로 돌아와 베트남으로 간다는 내용이다.

 

테드 라벤더 이외에도 박격폭탄에 맞아 사망한 커트 레몬, 지뢰를 밟은 부상으로 사망한 리 스트런크, 그리고 키오와의 죽음이 나온다. 그중 키오와의 죽음은 키오와가 박격포를 맞고 늪지대에 빠졌을때 이를 구하지 못한 보우커를 죄책감에 빠지게 했고 전쟁이 끝난후 그를 자살하게 한다.

 

 

 

<인상깊은 문구들>

The things they carried were largely determined by necessity. Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs, wristwatches, dog tags, mosquito repellent, chewing gum, candy, cigarettes, salt tablets, packets of Kool-Aid, lighters, matches, sewing kits, Military Payment Certificates, C rations, and two or three canteens of water. Together, these items weighed between 12 and 18 pounds, depending upon a man's habits or rate of metabolism. Henry Dobbins, who was a big man, carried extra rations; he was especially fond of canned peaches in heavy syrup over pound cake. Dave Jensen, who practiced field hygiene, carried a toothbrush, dental floss, and several hotel-sized bars of soap he'd stolen on R&R in Sydney, Australia. Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers until he was shot in the head outside the village of Than Khe in mid-April. By necessity, and because it was SOP, they all carried steel helmets that weighed 5 pounds including the liner and camouflage cover. They carried the standeard fatigue jackets and trousers. Very few carried underwear. On their feet they carried jungle boots - 2.1 pounds - and Dave Jensen carried three pairs of socks and a can of Dr. Scholl's foot powder as a precaution againt trench foot. Until he was shot, Ted Lavender carried 6 or 7 ounces of premium dope, which for him was a necessity. Mitchell Sanders, the RTO, carried condoms. Norman Bowker carried a diary. Rat Kiley carried comic books. Kiowa, a devout Baptist, carried an illustrated Now Testament that had been presented to him by his father, who taught Sunday school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. <P2 : 11 ~P3 :7>

Often, they carried each other, the wounded or weak. They carried infections. They carried chess sets, basketballs, Vietnamese-English dictionaries, insignia of rank, Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts, plastic cards imprinted with the Code of Conduct. They carried diseases, among them malaria and dysentery. They carried lice and ringworm and leeches and paddy algae and various rots and molds. They carried the land itself - Vietnam, the place,  the soil - a powdery orange-red dust that covered their boots and fatigues and faces. They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere, they carried it, the humidity, the monsoons, the stink of fungus and decay,  all of it, they carried gravity. <P14 : 4 ~15> 


Norman Bowker lying on his back one night, watching the stars, then whispering to me, "I'll tell you something, O"Brien. If I could have onewish, anything, I'd wish for my dad to write me a letter and say it's okay if I don't win any medals. That's all my old man talks about, nothing else. How he can't wait to see goddamn medals." <P34 :24 ~30>



The money lay on the table for the rest of the evening. It was still there when I went back to my cabin. In the morning, though, I found an envelope tacked to my door. Inside were the four fifties and a two-word note that said EMERGENCY FUND. The man knew. <P51 : 25 ~30>

And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do. It's about love andmemory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen.

<책을 읽고 나서>

 

여러개의 단편들을  모아서 한권의 책으로 출판되었다. 이야기들이 사건이 발생한  순서대로 나온것이 아니고 작가의 회고를 따라가면서 서술된것이라  조금은 혼란스럽기도 하지만 전체적으로 훌륭하게 씌여진 책이다. 읽으면서 전쟁이란게 얼마나 무의미한 것인가를 다시 생각하게 되고 전쟁를 경험한 세대는 민간인이나 군인이나 다 같이 치유할수 없는 상처를 안고 살게 된다는 것을 , 이 책은  전쟁을 경험하지 않고 전쟁터에 참전도 안해본 사람들의 이해를 돕는다.  이 한권의 책만으로도 베트남 전쟁에서 군인들이 어떻게 지내고, 어떻게 움직이며, 그들의 두려움을 어떻게 감당해 내는지 고스란히 들여다 보는 기분이다. 그리고 아무리 많은 시간이 지난다  하더라도 그들의 마음 깊은곳에는 그때의 두려움과 전우를 잃은 죄책감을 벗어나지 못하는 삶을 살아간다는 것도 느낄수 있었다.

 

 

<영어원서로 읽기>

 

고등학교 수준의 단어 실력이면 읽을수 있다.  

영어원서  필사 하기에 좋은 책이다.

물론 군인들이 죽는 장면도 나오고 그래서 자책하는 사람들의 심리 묘사도 나와 다소 어두운 부분도 있지만, 이책은 단편들의 모음들이라 침울한 부분은 빼버리고 골라서 필사를 한다면 작문 실력 향상에 도움이 될 좋은 문장들이 많이 나오고, 무엇보다 작가가 같은 단어를 반복해서 사용하는 패턴이 많아서 필사를 하다보며 저절로 단어의 사용법을 익히게 된다.

이 책은 고등학교에서 추천도서로 영어수업에 사용되기도 한다.

(학교마다 선생님마다 사용하는 책이 다르긴 하지만 우리 아이들은 고등학교때 여름방학에 읽어야 할 추천 도서였다)
